Hiding Tells
Do you ever obtain that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the closest casino, to uncover a great stakes game of Holdem, to sit at a Chemin de fer table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I love to scratch it.
I also love to watch people today wager. No 2 poker faces seem equal. When I bet I like to think I put on a poker face which is impassable. Except I know I have certain mannerisms. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I bet on poker or Chemin de fer. And then I smoke. Except I smoke no matter whether I am succeeding or losing, whether or not I’ve a great hand or bad.
I once wagered within a weekly poker game. The game was generally 5 card draw. There was a man who wagered with us just about every week who generally wore a hat. When he was dealt a good hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and wagering with his hat. Pointless to say, he never won.
The greatest poker gambler I ever saw was a man who manufactured additional movements and signals at a poker table than anybody I had ever seen. He was impressive in the way he dressed. Often an costly suit and tie, boots shined and nails manicured. He was diligent in this manner. And he was generally brushing his pants or holding his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.
I use to analyze him for long periods of time. I’d attempt to see if I could notice his tell. Choosing fuzz off his jacket- did this mean he was bluffing? Arranging his chips within a short pile – did this mean he had a very good hand?
Years later I ran into him in the bar in Boston and we had a beer. I asked him if he have been aware of all those activities he made or if they have been unconscious. He told me that just about every little thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is often checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are attempting to spot the the tell.
So his system was to provide them lots to consider about. His reasoning was if they have been pondering about him choosing a piece of lint off his jacket and what it meant they positive were not pondering about their cards.
His system was diversion. And it worked for him. In no way give up a system that functions for you.
